What are CorbisStudio’s next challenges in the AEC Industry?
We shared a conversation with Martin Lopez, Head of Operations. We talked about his daily responsibilities and assignments, what are CorbisStudio next challenges in the AEC industry, and what is it that makes our company a great solution on BIM services, Project Delivery, and Construction Project Management.
For this October edition of CorbisStudio’s Global Ink, we shared a conversation with Martin Lopez, Head of Operations.
His main focus in the company is to be the link between external and internal customers. He is responsible for the delivery to the external customer and for the mood and satisfaction of the internal customer (service delivered to the external customer). That is the focus of his daily attention, in his own words.
Project Architects, who are responsible for each Project Unit, and Project Managers, that are focused on everything involving service delivery, are the positions that report directly to him.
We talked about his daily responsibilities and assignments, what are CorbisStudio next challenges in the AEC industry, and what is it that makes our company a great solution on BIM services, Project Delivery Partnership, and Construction Project Management. This is what he told us:
What is your job within CorbisStudio, when managing and carrying out leadership operations with the whole team and with clients?
This position requires strong social skills. Today, we are a team of over 100 people from different generations. Among them, we find the seniors, who are around the age of 40 and the juniors, who are around the age of 25. This forces a person of 40 years and 15 years of professional experience, like me, to understand both generations, their desires, aspirations, and fears.
I have to come up with the proper way to interact with each generation, which is the opposite of a vertical leadership model, where one imposes his own reading and beliefs to the rest of the team.
In terms of visibility, what is the main challenge for CorbisStudio in order to be prepared and answer quickly to clients, taking the company’s forecast into consideration?
We have the challenge of establishing ourselves in the market as an IPM (Integrated Project Manager), which is a role we are building because nobody currently holds that position.
This role is meant to be a coordinator of everything that happens between a real estate development's schematic design phase and the finished product. All that’s in between requires this role that manages every single actor in the construction process, while keeping two horizons in mind: costs and time. Amid these variables, we have to find the best possible outcome.
In addition to that, and moving on to the world-class market, we are conscious that the American AEC market is at a boiling point right now with a growth rate of more than 3%.
For this market, we are focused on providing the service of Construction Project Manager and Coordinator aiming at General Contractors and Developers without neglecting the production areas for Architecture and Engineering, understanding that the real game is in providing integrated solutions for the construction market.
Considering CorbisStudio's proven response capability to customers in terms of time and quality, what do you do to be always prepared with ready-to-go teams?
CorbisStudio response capacity is based on its own expertise, which is made up of long accumulated experience that today allows us to work in different markets. We have worked on projects based in Australia, South Africa, the United States, and Argentina... All of this has given us the ability to adapt quickly to any market.
But it also requires having very fine methods and systems that carry forward these processes in order to respond with agility and precision.
We are a company that complies with ISO standards, verified every year. We have a full-time PMO position (which is a position that not all similar companies have) and we have developed internally a project management software that allows us to individualize project by project and monitor them easily. We have also designed a series of areas and positions that allow us to have a conscious view of the result of our ongoing projects that avoid unpleasant surprises in the final outcome.
Having said all that, in relation to CorbisStudio, in my own opinion, everything has to do with our motto: "it's all about people". And that’s our foundation: the kind of professionals that we work with.
Talking about the chapter of CorbisStudio’s Continuing Education and the Career Development Program. What functions do both of the programs fulfill?
Education is a whole separate chapter for us and it is divided into two perspectives: the first is focused on the utility for the company, because having highly skilled people allows us to perform in the best possible way; and the second has to do with the organization’s mission, which states that the professionals’ experience in CorbisStudio has to be an exceptional professional experience, (in the sense that all that you can learn and grow working here and on how the company fosters the professionals in what they decide to specialize in).
Besides, we have internal training courses every day, Lunch & Learns, LEED training, and a Diploma in Project Delivery developed by the Corbis Foundation, to complement the high education level that local universities have.
I think it is important to clarify that this is how we understand it. We can impart these courses because the university provides us with professionals who have a very solid bedrock, and from there we contribute to their professional take-off.
We contribute to our team with this diploma that rounds the 150 hours of training, during three months with 4-5 hours per week. We want those professionals to be trained to be able to manage projects, whether they work at CorbisStudio or on their own.
In addition to the 3 values that guide the company's life, Expertise, Excellence and Experience, what would you say that are 3 values that are taken for granted in the world-class market? What would be CorbisStudio’s value that makes it different from the rest?
We are a problem-solving specialist; we have worked for engineering architecture, urban and peripheral projects. We have always achieved great results because we have the people, systems, and quality controls to do it. We know how to manage problems.
If I have to say how I’d stand on CorbisStudio if I were a client, I’d say I’d prefer it because it solves my problems and because I’ll earn spare time by choosing this company.
What are your thoughts on what the future holds for the AEC industry?
I think that the debate will center on the change or metamorphosis of the professional role. This famous image of the architect drawing on his desk or working with a mouse, I think, will be migrating to a mentality with a clear technical aspect and how to translate designs into some other instruction format.
This mentality is already installed today in many large projects, in which we even participate (such as the use of HoloLens and other kinds of technology such as augmented reality and virtual reality) and allows us to anticipate to the old Brunelleschi’s conical perspective made on paper to see the building documentation in augmented reality at the construction site.
At CorbisStudio, we have our mindset on this. We believe that every organization should think in terms of continuous improvement.
We have a corporate identity that implies constant questioning at all times and if possible, introducing the necessary upgrades to be at the forefront. That’s the only way to avoid being overcome by a future Uber or Netflix in the AEC industry.
